Abstract

This paper aims to present a re-reading of Paulo Freire`s perspectives on literacy establishing a connection between its proposed critical literacy and the New Literacy Studies (NEL) proposed by Street, 1984 2003; Barton & Hamilton, 2000; Barton, 2007; Gee, 1995. We can place your perspective of literacy in a close relationship with the ideological model proposed by Street (1984) that conceives literacy as a sociocultural practice permeated by power relations. We conclude that literacy process is therefore inseparable from the social construction of reading and writing practices; teachers need to question themselves continually on how social relationships influence and constitute the literacy processes.
