Abstract

In this paper, we analyze the issue of reading education in Brazil during the 19th century, from the perspective of the life of Antonio de Araujo Ferreira Jacobina (1829-1896). A Brazilian teacher, politician, banker, farmer and intellectual, Jacobina managed to move between two regimes - the Empire and the Republic - without party polarizations and ruptures. In particular, it is highlighted his reading method exposed in the work Syllabario Nacional ou novo methodo para aprender a ler (National Syllabary or new method for learning to read), published in 1883, considering both the materiality of the book and its didactics organization, and the assumptions that subsidized the lessons, in dialogue with the international production of textbooks for reading education in the nineteenth century.
