Abstract

This essay discusses ideas of Brazilian scholar Magda Soares, from her 1986 book Linguagem e Escola: uma perspectiva social (Language and School: a social perspective), one of her most important contributions on the political understanding of school and language. Such ideas are compared to those of bell hooks, which are mainly developed in three works: Teaching to Transgress (2014 [1994]); Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope (2021 [2003]); and Teaching Critical Thinking: Practical Wisdom (2020 [2010]). Soares and hooks exposed social inequalities and their association with student performance. Likewise, the authors recognized cultural diversity and its influence in the school context, defended the importance of quality education for minorities and considered the possibilities of a transformative teaching. Both authors also emphasized the importance of progressive thinking in the school environment and reinforced the idea of classroom as a possible space for the manifestation of diversity, alterity, criticism, citizenship, cultural diversity and integral education.
